AQUANOSTRA, one of the main seafood companies in Portugal, with more than 55h of production area, has full control over all stages of the oyster production cycle, from hatchery to depuration and distribution.
We are setting up new longline operations for which we require a marine farm skipper. The longline farm will utilize a new innovative mechanized continuous harvest cultivation system.

Role Purpose:

The skipper on a longline oyster farm plays a multifaceted role that involves managing operations, ensuring compliance with regulations, maintaining equipment, and overseeing the well-being of the farm’s environment and workforce. Your expertise is essential for the success of the farm and the production of high-quality oysters. This role follows a 5-on, 2-off schedule.

Key Responsibilities:

– Operating longline seeding/harvest vessel
– Maintaining flotation of longlines and carrying out line maintenance
– Leading seeding and harvest operations
– Liaising with the gluing operation and onshore processing crews
– Practicing excellent Health & Safety awareness, running a tight crew, being regimented in ensuring your team is systematic, methodical, and orderly, being alert to new safety hazards that may present themselves, and following strict protocols to ensure you and your crew come home safely without injury every time
– Leading from the front and fostering a positive and collaborative working environment on board
– Monitoring and responding to weather conditions, tides, and currents for safe operation
– Having a practical understanding of Portuguese regulations, complying with legal obligations and safety requirements

Attributes & Skills Required:

– Minimum of 2 years operating vessels
– Minimum of 2 years aquaculture farming experience
– Vessel maintenance experience
– Excellent communication skills for conveying instructions clearly and maintaining open communication with the crew and farm management
– Effective leadership skills to manage and motivate the crew
– Quick thinking and the ability to make informed decisions
– The ability to lead by example and enforce safety measures among the crew
– Comfort with working outside in all weather conditions and at ease on the water
– A proactive ‘can-do’ attitude, someone who sets the thermostat, a positive problem solver, a can-do person who wants to improve personally and professionally
